East meets west: Jewels of the Maharajas from Al Thani Collection

Exhibition from November 3, 2018 – February 24, 2019

The Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco welcomes the Cartier Collection to be part of the Exhibition East Meets West: Jewels of the Maharajas from the Al Thani Collection. The Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani Collection has been displayed at museums all over the world including New York’s Metropolitan Museum in 2014, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2015, and Paris’ Grand Palais and Beijing’s Palace Museum in 2017. From November 3, 2018, San Francisco will welcome the impressive exhibition featuring 150 precious objects dating from the time of the Mughal Empire to the present day. The exquisite objects highlight the history of lavish Indian court jewelry and the influence of Indian jewelry traditions on European creations. The Cartier Collection has loaned two ceremonial necklaces that belonged to the Maharaja of Patiala. These imposing monochrome pieces of jewelry, commissioned in 1928, combine local traditions with unique expertise. Contemporary Cartier creations from the Al Thani Collection are also on display, illustrating how the Maison's stylistic identity continues to be influenced by Indian culture.
